Elections tradition in Curacao

Next year January there will be parliament elections in the Netherlands Antilles. Today (November 23) the different parties participating in the elections presented their list with candidates to the electoral board on the different islands. This is a new tradition and I experienced it for the first time in Curacao and took some pictures of the three parties that came in after 2.00 PM.

This is the political stretch of the island. One fan of the nationalistic leftists party Pueblo Soberano disputing with a fan of the rightist liberal party PAR, the reigning party for the last 15 years.

Three progressive opposition parties (the social democrats MAN, the radical left party Niun Paso Atras and the social- liberal party Forsa Korsou) joined in a combination, going to the elections with the slogan Uni den Victoria, united in the victory and Ban p'e Kambio, going for change.

The liberal party PAR has ruled the country for the last 15 years and takes pride in having let the economy grow and realizing the coming constitutional changes. Will the 'money party' win the elections again, or will the union in the till now divided opposition stand a chance this time?

The workers party Frente Obrero took their leader Anthony Godett on a caterpillar, claiming 'Godett si ta traha!' Godett make things happen.

I'm in Curacao. deel 1

I arrived in Curacao y\this week and will be adding pictures and stories in different languagues about my stay. I begin today in Dutch.

(foto 1)

3 october. Kana ku libertat

Kana ku libertat
17 ougùstùs 1795 Tula, Karpata, Sablika i otronan a marcha.
Nan marcha di lucha pa libertat.
Un marcha ku no a kaba ahinda, te awe nos ta sigui pone paso.

Pero paso den ki rumbo? Paso pa kibra kadena?
Kadena di bèrguensa o kompleho?

Awe 3 di òktober, e dia ku Tula su pianan a wòrdu kitá,
Mi ke para ketu i pensa.
Posombra danki na Tula mi libertat ta mi responsabilidat.
Awe mi tin ku sinta un ratu anto pensa kon mi ta sigui kana ku libertat.

Stappen in vrijheid

Want dankzij Tula’s strijd is mijn vrijheid mijn eigen verantwoordelijkheid.

Berguensa!

Roze Zondag Kwakoe

I gave an interview about Pink Kwakoe, a gay event during a big Caribbean festival in Amsterdam I helped organise. The reporter made the conclusion in saying I don't advertise my homosexuality broadly, even though I'm out to friends and family. I meant to say that a lot of people in my Antillean and the Surinamese community are ... Read Moreout to their friends and family, but don't advertise it broadly. I'm an gay activist, so I am very visible in the community as a gay man, for example with the organisation of Pink Kwakoe together with COC Amsterdam.
In the article I state that in the Antillean culture there is room for so called effeminate man to be gay, but the look like other man and be gay is hard. And that's what someone like me is also advocating: people don't have to give up there so called masculinity to be homosexual. This is the male story. In the show we had the 23 year old Miss Femme 2009, telling her story from a lesbian and bisexual point of view. She is from Surinamese descent.

Papia ku mi- My IDAHO poem

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia and transphobia. In a poetry workshop I'm doing here in Amsterdam in which I write Dutch, we had an assingment to write a poem about homophobia. I was very satisfied with the one I made and I'm presenting it to you today.

Music: Issoco
Picture: Ajamu

Papia ku mi
Zeg een woord
Papia ku mi
Vraag het maar

Er zijn beelden in je hoofd
Die hoofd met ogen,
Die ogen die volgen,
Observeren.

Papia ku mi
Spreek het uit
Voordat die beelden
Voos, vies en verkeerd worden

De beelden in je hoofd
Over de liefde
Genegenheid
Van mij naar-
Ook een man.

Papia ku mi
Zeg wat je denkt
Papia ku mi,
Luister ook naar mij!

End of months of debate in Curacao referendum.

'Yes' vote wins in Curacao
Voters in Curacao have chosen to accept the conditions under which the island will form a new constitutional relationship with Holland.

A referendum on Friday saw the ‘yes’ vote winning with 52 per cent of the votes cast against 48 for those against.

The turnout was 67 per cent of the 119 thousand people eligible to vote.

Curacao had negotiated for a ‘country status’ within the Dutch Kingdom, giving it direct relations with Holland as part of the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles.

However, among the key conditions demanded by the Dutch government were; having a oversight over the island’s judicial and financial affairs in return for cancelling Curacao’s debt (to Holland) of around a billion dollars.

The ‘no’ campaign opposed that deal.

The victory for the ‘yes’ vote now means that the process of dismantling the Dutch Caribbean federation can continue towards the target date of 2010.

Curacao and St Maarten will each be accorded ‘country status’ but with Holland having final say on financial management and judicial issues.

The other islands – Bonaire, Saba and St Eustatius – have agreed to be integrated into provinces in Holland.

The other Dutch Caribbean island, Aruba, opted for ‘country status’ in 1986 when it broke away from the Netherlands Antilles group.

Anousha N'Zume question reaction in Dutch media on novel dealing with black woman

Anousha N'Zume, a very intelligent and conscious actress, performer and TV producer I've been working with, is very furious about the reactions in Dutch media and literature circles on a book by author Robert Vuisje. In this award winning book, the author describes the search of a Jewish upper-class man for his ideal 'black woman'. He concludes that the black intellectual is as boring as the Jewish girls of his community, so he need the 'black Rowanda' living in a black neighbourhood and having sex for a bottle of breezes. The same old stereotype of the black woman as a sex object and loving giving sexual pleasure to white man.

Anousha really succeeded in making a point and making the presenter of the program think about his own role in this. In a interview in his program, he called black woman 'the beast', a term not even the author uses in the book.

Marlon in debate Radio Netherlands

I participated in a radio debate of the Radio Netherlands Worldservice about the upcoming referendum about constitutional chances in Curacao of May 15. The debate is in Papiamentu.

Den e debate aki mi a purba aklara algun opinion.
Kampo NO ta purba spanta hende pa vota NO, nan ta hasi uso di un miedu pa 'dominio'Ulandes. Un miedu irashonal ku ta bini huntu den e palabra 'rekolonisashon'. Pero e kampo di SI tambe ta usa miedu. Nan ta usa e miedu di pèrde 'siguridatnan ekonomiko' ku hende tin. Nan kampaña ta dirihi kompletamente riba miedu di pobresa.
Bienestar dje pueblo?
Skucha e debate akinan.

From the archives: Reggie Williams about Essex Hemphill

Activist Reggie Williams has lived in Amsterdam from 1994 till his death in 1999. He was a very inspiring friend, colleague and tutor to me and more black and white gay men and lesbian women in Amsterdam. He introduced us to a lot of African American gay cultural products which wouldn't have reached us through the mainstream channels.

Marlon Riggs, Reggie Williams and Essex Hemphill

When Essex Hemphill died in 1995, he was a guest at the local radio-program Global Perspective to pay tribute to this great poet and his beloved friend. He is joined by Jerry Haime reading a poem in this interview with Andre Reeder.

Dutch Memorial Day

The Dutch Kingdom pay tribute to all casualties of WWII in the Kingdom on May 4. The last years the scope of the remembrance has been broaden with other war victims and victims of terror. In Amsterdam there is also a ceremony at the Homomonument, to commemorate the homosexual victims of the Nazi regime during WWII and other LGBT victims of terror and violence. I have visited the ceremony a couple of years and it was very nice to be there yesterday together with friends I made during my black gay activist years in Amsterdam in the organisation Strange Fruit. My radio program colleague Antoine (whom I also met at Strange Fruit) presented a flower arrangement on behalf of our program Global Perspective and gaystation MVS. And a couple of us were there in his support and really enjoyed seeing each other again as a group, which hasn't occurred in a couple of years.
The pictures were taken by our British colleague and friend Ajamu

Mi ta na Kòrsou! I'am on Curacao

Here I am, enjoying my short stay in Curacao.

I didn’t have a lot of plans but I’m experiencing the island life at full extents. The referendum about the upcoming constitutional changes is dominating everything, from the whole media till birthday’s parties. The topic of the referendum is the approval or disapproval of the political agreement on the new constitutional status of Curaçao achieved by the Curaçao government with its partners in the Kingdom, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Maarten, Aruba and the Netherlands in Europe. This political agreement generally entails the following two issues: (1) de constitutional status of Curaçao and (2) the national debt of the Netherlands Antilles and Curaçao.

My first day I saw friends and we talked a lot about the referendum. How the discussions about it are dividing the island in two camps: the YES and the NO camp. I have heard some people also saying that they will boycott the whole thing, because they think it shouldn’t have been organised in the first place.
My second day on Curacao I also went out. A friend took me to Madamme Jeanette, a monthly get together organised by Curacao Gay Plasa, the local gay events organiser. It’s held in a new venue called Central Park on the business outskirts of the city. The party started very slow but got nice at the end. The DJ was not cooperating with me neither. I just do not like house beats and they really annoy me at that he was playing at the beginning. That meant talking outside with friends (about the goddamn referendum again) and of course gossiping. The local gay scene isn’t really big, so people living on the island know everyone and some times also some details about their personal lives. I saw some people I knew and danced a lot mostly at the end on the Caribbean tunes that the DJ played then.
Because the music played a party is one of the defining way to select the audience. I heard that at this party Madame Jeannete there is not a lot of local music played. This is done to attract a higher class audience.

I have the feeling that the class/ racial divide has widen on the island the last ten years. This is on of the explosive things underneath all the referendum debates and this divide is always denied by the island establishment and the coalition. Eastern Sunday I went ot a local party with the famous Arubian band Claudius Phillips and Oreo and that was a really local affair: no tourists and a mostly black audience. The party was nice and I danced nearly the whole night and saw my cousins, old schoolmates and other people I knew.
The contrast with the party the day before could not have been bigger. Not the gay/ straight contrast but more the cultural difference felt the bigger. I was not the only one who attended both, so there are more people that can bridge those differences. Such a small island and so different worlds!

At the family lunch I attended during the day also the discussion turned around the referendum. I noticed that there are people convinced about NO, and other people feel that there are not another option than go for YES, to take the offered package that could give some relief to the burden of the big financial debt that the island has accumulated the past decades.
But the whole things shouldn’t have been about this, it was suppose to be about he constitutional changes and now it only revolves about the financial bail out. A missed chance.
I am curious what more I will encounter on my next days on the island.

My radiocolumns in Papiamentu for AFO

More then 10 years I wrote columns for the black gay radio program Global Perspective in Amsterdam through MVS radio (www.mvs.nl)
I decided to translate them in Papiamentu due to the launching of the first Papiamentu gay website AFO. By FOKO, Fundashon Orguyo Kòrsou, the Curacao Pride Foundation. I wanted to support their work here from Amsterdam with my thoughts and writings. The first column is called Duna’mi un pal’i hòmber, and deals with the traps of wanting a so called ‘real man’ and letting a ‘good man’ pass by.

Duna’ mi un pali hòmber

Un pali’ hòmber, manera Roy.
Roy a nasé na Kòrsou meskos ku mi, i tabata sòlda na Yugoslavia.
Roy ta pretu, kòrtiku, muskulá i bon proporshoná.
Nos a bai un guera feros
Kasi pa kibra kama.
Sèks ku ne tabata bon.
Masha bon mes.

Mi a konsiderá un relashon.
Pero un anochi huntu ta wak televishon,
m’a ripara ku ami ku Roy no por a ni papia di mi interesnan.
Esaki si no por den un relashon.
Pa bon ku e sèks por tabata.

Duna’mi un pal’i hòmber.
Un pal’i hòmber manera Tito.
Kurpa grandi, pero menos muskulo i un tiki mask kla.
No dje bunita ei, pero hopi mas amabel
Ami ku Tito tabata papia di karnaval- su gran pashon.
E tabata traha spich pa su subrina
pa e bai kompeti den elekshon di reina di karnaval.
Mi tambe gusta karnaval. I hopi kos mas
Tito no tabata dje interesá den eseinan.

Tito tabata un hende hopi sensibel
Ku tabata stima su mama masha ku a fayese algun aña promé.
Tito ta un pal’i hòmber sensibel.

Pero ami tabata ke un pal’i hòmber.

Te ora m’a topa un bon hòmber.
Un bon hòmber no semper tin kurpa grandi, muskulá i un bestia den kama.
Ounke e tambe tabata sende mi kandela.
M’a lag’e bai…..

Un bon hòmber no tin e mesun interesnan ku mi.
Pero e ta habrí pa komprondenan si.
Un bon hòmber ta sensibel i amabel.
Un bon hòmber ta esun ku ta pensa riba mi tambe.

Un bon hòmber tambe ta un pal’i hòmber.
Me ke un pal’i bon hòmber.
